Osamu Tezuka was a Japanese cartoonist and animator Tezuka was believed to be the father on Manga. The Japanese cartoon and animation with a large wide eyed characters.
Tezuka made this silent film in the style of an old black and white cartoon (there is a short colour element later in the feature). Applying the hick ups and glitches that appeared in old films and cartoons of early film making.
The premise is a western cowboy setting. It is based on a stereotypical tale told repeatedly in films and books.
The damsel in distress is an impossibly beautiful woman. She is saved by a loner who gets involved not really by his own choosing but because of the circumstances that befall him.
Is he broken down by the circumstances that have him fall into this woman’s arms.
Some of the circumstances are based in the inability for the film to play properly reminiscent of early tv’s where tv pictures would break up and split in the middle. A man is shown hitting a tv with a hammer frustrated. (the frustration felt when things don’t go as we want them)
The picture (life?) pushing him down .The cowboy falls from his horse and gets up again. He gets tangled in a line drawing of tumble weed. He trys to untangle the mess it just gets bigger and he falls back on his derriere.
The call of, “help” in the form of a voice bubble is heard by the cowboy.
The impossibly beautiful Betty Boop look alike character is tied to the railway line. I presume by the baddie that features later. She is bound to the railway line waiting for the train to come. In bondage, submissive her former lover wishes to murder her horribly.
Tezuka has drawn her much longer and with large breasts. Making what may look more Westerners or at least the ideals promoted as attractive (breast augmentations were hugely popular in the 1980’s)
The dream of being saved. Many imagine they may be saved one day by someone.
He saves the woman. Then has to save her from the baddie that dominated her. helped with the glitches on the tv screen.
The cowboy and the woman are suddenly transported to a coloured scene almost Disney like where they dance, waltz and twirl in this idyllically. They are in a wonderful grand house, dressed in fine clothes. The image is perfect, clear and in colour, there are no glitches in the picture at all. This wonderful fantasy of perfection.
They seem suddenly slightly startled by their fantasy as they kiss a red line then comes up between them spoiling their connection. The red line appears on his face. e looks irritated. Maybe realising the reality of the situation? The scene goes all blurred and frantic. One imagines they are making love.
It cuts to him leaving on his horse. He is enchanted and is mid-air floating, suspended as the horse walks off. But then is back in his saddle it seems he has no choice. There will be no fairy tale ending. The end opens again with the same image upside down.
