Intervention
We had one hour to intervene with a space of our choice. We were split into two groups of four people. With no plan, no specific materials. One group named themselves the ’Cock Crunchers’, we called ourselves the ‘Penetrating Posers’.
We looked round the studio for materials. Finding some card that could make a structure, an old phone and a stand. We wanted to go somewhere that it would be seen. It was windy, so there was trouble keeping the structure up, and safe. Masking tape helped. We tied the phone to the stand.
Sarah found a telephone sound on her phone. Which she played. I went in to answer the phone. Then I started to call out some names to passersby’s.” Arnold
Arnold! Andrew! Paul! Brian!”
This guy’s head turned.
I said “Brian! Brian! Come here it’s a call for you”
Eventually he came over to our booth. He takes the phone.
Brian said “who was it?”
Me “I think it was your Mum”
You can see that it has thrown him out, it’s all very surreal.
He thinks he’s on some TV show. First it seemed unusual that someone as young as him would be called Brian!
Later it occurred to me that a telephone box is very much something that I was brought up with. When I talked to the others who are in their twenties, I discovered that actually telephone boxes are something they have seen, or know of, but have never used.
It is fascinating that we created something together and we all have different ides of what it was, having different reference points because of age.
We filmed some other calls outside. The one with Brian unfortunately did not film properly.
Does it matter?
I thought the still photos of the scene where a great story in itself.
The art not just being the resulting film, but all of what happened.
I’m starting to think that Art can be made all the time. It does not need special preparation every time
