Tracy Emin’s book Strangeland is a very open, brutally honest account of her life. At times here are aspects of the story that slip in and out of fantasy.
Blurring certain situations, suggesting sexual relations with her twin brother when they were young or when her mother’s boyfriend had tried to commit and act of sodomy against her.
She spoke mainly about her sometimes very strange and intimate relationships, sexual and non sexual, with many people in her life.
She appeared to have no sense of boundaries.
I had been dissapointed that she didn’t talk about her art or art career in the book. I then realised after watching her video ‘Why I never became a dancer’ 1995, that the book was ALL about her art. It explains everything she makes art about.
The video tells of her innocent exploration of sex as a 14 year old and of the men in their 20’s who took advantage of that.
Just a beautiful and simply sharing of the human experience.
It makes feel that Art does not need to be super clever or complex.
Sometimes I over think to try to find and make a great idea.
I now feel I want to get back to the heart of things. Start at the ‘real’ and build on that.
